What Counts as a Plumbing Emergency?

Anything spreading, or anything that leaves the house unusable tonight:

  • A split water pipe or a snapped tap that won't turn off
  • Sewage rising through a floor waste, shower or toilet
  • Water running out of the bottom of the hot water tank, or a tank gone cold that won't relight
  • A smell of gas, which goes to the gas network's emergency line first, then to us for the repair
  • Stormwater heading for the house from a blocked yard gully

A drip from a mixer tap or a sluggish sink is real work, but it can wait for daylight. Not sure which yours is? Give us a call and we can talk it through, and if it belongs to another trade we name that trade.

Burst Pipe? Shut the Mains First

Every minute the water runs means more wet flooring, so stop it before anything else.

Turn off the main tap

It sits beside the water meter. Turn it clockwise until it stops.

Empty the pipes

Open the lowest tap in the house so the water left in the system runs out there.

Keep water and power apart

If the leak has reached a power point or appliance, turn the power off at the board before you walk in.

Contain the spread

Towels and buckets under the leak limit the damage until we arrive.

The galvanised water pipes laid across Gateshead West between 1964 and 1967 can give way at rusted threads, sometimes leaving the whole house without water until the pipe is remade.

One Build, One Failure Clock

One age of pipe across the estate

The commission's fibro and weatherboard cottages went up from 1964 to 1967, water and sewer pipes included, and the original galvanised services on Cadaga, Carbeen and Mallee streets are rusting from the inside. When one service fails, the ones next door are the same age and material.

Rental changeovers leave weak points

Low-grade flexible hoses fitted in a rush between tenants can burst months later under sinks and behind washing machines, and a failed hose is quick to swap for a braided one of proper quality.

Storms push the sewers over

Clay sewer pipes of the same age under the estate can block together in heavy rain, and sewage then spills from whichever yard gully sits lowest.

From Your Ring to the Repair

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4063 3469 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

    Safe first, fixed second

The water gets shut off, the leak stopped or the blockage cleared, and the repair finished with fittings from the van.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

What Moves an After-Hours Figure?

  • Time of night An after-hours call carries its own rate, which we give you while booking.
  • Where the pipe failed A split in an open wall cavity is quicker to reach than one buried in a slab.
  • Which pipe failed Remaking galvanised steel, joining copper and replacing PVC take different time and fittings.
  • Stock in the van Standard valves and hoses travel with us, and an unusual part can mean a temporary fix until morning.

When We're Not the Right Call

Water escaping from the pipe between the meter and the main belongs to Hunter Water, whose crews repair it. A switchboard that keeps tripping because of a wet floor needs a licensed electrician, and water coming in through the roof needs a roofer.

Middle-of-the-Night Questions

Do you charge more to come out at night?

After-hours work has its own rate, and we give it to you on the phone. It costs nothing to get us out to your door (excluding after-hours). If the job can safely wait until morning, we say that plainly and book it for daylight.

The pipe has burst and water is everywhere. What do I do first?

Close the valve beside the meter, then open a downstairs or outside tap to let the pipes empty. Unplug anything near the water, stay away from wet power points and give us a call.

Is no hot water an emergency at 11pm?

It is urgent, and you can ring us for it at any hour. A tank that has simply gone cold can wait for a morning swap, but a leaking or scalding unit can't. If the new one has to be ordered, a loan tank can go in overnight.

A tap has sheared off and I can't stop the spray. Is that a job for you?

Yes. Close the meter valve first, then ring. A burst hose under the sink or a broken tap body is a straightforward emergency repair, and we can replace a low-grade hose with a better one on the same visit.
