Stormwater Drains Gateshead

Stormwater drains in Gateshead back up when rain has nowhere to go: water pooling at the downpipes, the yard gully spilling over, or the driveway turning into a creek. We clear the line with a jetter or an electric eel, run the camera down to confirm, and name the full price before any work starts.

Get the water moving. Ring (02) 4063 3469 or send the form, and the plumber in Gateshead crew gets it flowing again. Sewer, kitchen and root blockages are all covered from the blocked drains hub.

Why Do Stormwater Drains Block After Rain?

Stormwater pipes carry whatever the rain picks up, and the usual culprits are:

  • Leaves, mulch and garden soil washed into the pits, building up at low bends
  • Gravel and sediment from driveways and paths, which pack solid at the first sag in the pipe
  • Tree roots pushing into old joints, just as they do in the clay sewers under the estate
  • A line crushed or sagged by ground movement, which collects debris every storm even after a clear

A single heavy storm can turn a part-blocked line into a flooded yard, which is why the fault shows up in summer.

How Do You Know It's Stormwater, Not Sewer?

The two share yard space but give different signs, and the difference matters for what gets done next:

  • Stormwater shows as pooling at downpipes, water sitting in surface pits, or runoff backing up the driveway
  • Sewer shows as a gully spilling grey water, a smell in the yard, or fixtures draining badly inside

When the signs overlap, one camera run tells the two apart. Sewage surging up in wet weather is a separate job, handled under blocked sewer work.

How We Clear a Stormwater Line

Trace the water first

We work from where the water is visible, back down the line, opening pits and gullies to find where the flow stops.

Clear the blockage

The jetter scours silt and root fibres off the pipe wall, or the electric eel cuts through where access is tight. No chemicals.

Camera the line

A CCTV pass after the clear shows what was in there and what state the pipe is in, so you know whether the next storm will get through.

Quote anything further

If the footage shows a cracked joint or a sagged section, that gets priced on its own before anyone touches it. The CCTV drain inspection page has more on what the camera picks up.

What Drives the Price of a Stormwater Clear?

A stormwater quote depends on how many pits are involved and what washed into them:

  • Number of pits and gullies One downpipe run to the kerb is a smaller job than a back yard with three gullies feeding one line
  • What washed in Packed silt and driveway gravel need more jetting passes than a loose wad of leaves
  • Buried pits A pit covered by concrete or turf has to be found and opened first
  • Storm-night calls After-hours work is charged at the after-hours rate, given when you book

Low-Side Yards and the Summer Storm Load

Uneven ground and heavy rain

Gateshead sits on undulating reactive clay, so runoff from higher yards crosses lower ones on its way to the street. Area figures put yearly rainfall at 1,148mm, with summer storms bringing it down hard.

Runoff from the Pacific Highway and the bypass

In a summer storm, water off the highway shopfronts and the Charlestown Bypass earthworks reaches the local pits all at once, so a line that copes with light rain can overflow in a downpour. Where a low yard floods each storm, the answer may be a cleared line plus a larger gully grate, and we price both so you can compare.

What Customers Say

[The team] have done an outstanding job at my mother's rental property. The area they worked on was particularly challenging, as it retained water and had become extremely muddy and boggy… The transformation has been remarkable.

When We're Not the Right Call

A blocked kerb pit or street stormwater pipe is council property, so we point you to Lake Macquarie council and charge nothing for a stretch that is not yours. Where a yard floods because of how the land falls, a landscaper's regrading may be the real fix.

Stormwater Questions From Gateshead

Is a blocked stormwater drain in Gateshead urgent?

It can wait a day if water is only pooling on paving and draining away slowly. It becomes urgent when water threatens to enter the house, or when a surcharging gully starts carrying silt toward the foundations. Ring and describe what the water is doing, and we can judge with you how soon it needs a plumber.

Why does my yard near the bypass embankment flood every big storm?

Storm water off the bypass earthworks and the highway strip arrives in one surge, more than an older yard line was built to carry. If your gully cannot take that surge, the line is either partly blocked or undersized, and a camera run will show which.

Can you stop leaves and mulch blocking the stormwater pits again?

We clear the line and show you which pits are catching the debris. On the roof side, gutter guards stop leaves at the gutter, priced as a separate job so you can decide.

Is the stormwater main in the street yours to clear?

No. The pipe inside your property up to the kerb connection is yours, and that is where we work. Kerb pits and street pipes belong to the council, and our footage shows which side of the line the blockage is on.
